WW2UsCollector Posted August 12 Share #1 Posted August 12 This grouping belonged to Harvey C. Sparman of Rochester, Michigan. Harvey arrived overseas on July 22nd, 1918 with the 338th Infantry Regiment. He joined Company L, 18th Infantry as a Corporal on August 18th, 1918. Harvey particpated in the Battles of St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Harvey was gassed on October 2nd, 1918. His company suffered numerous gas casualties that day since the ground they dug into was heavily saturated with gas, and in the morning the sun vaporized it. Harvey returned to his company in November 1918 and was reduced to the rank of Private. Harvey was discharged on April 24th, 1919. During the war Harvey was cited in General Orders No. 5, 1st Infantry Brigade. After the war, Harvey suffered from his war injuries and had numerous visits with the Veterans Hospital. In 1937, Harvey devloped gangrene in his feet and ended up having both his legs amputated at the thigh. Harvey sadly passed away in 1943. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
