Len S Posted August 7, 2024 #1 Posted August 7, 2024 I acquired this helmet recently. I believe it’s a M1917 reworked into a M1917A1. The helmet has an EGA stenciled on its front as well as ‘A -72” above it. Am I correct to assume that the marking refers to an artillery unit ? The name “D.L. Lewis” is stamped on several locations on the leather interior as well as the shell itself. Here are some pics. Len
aef1917 Posted August 8, 2024 #2 Posted August 8, 2024 It is indeed an m1917 updated to the m1917a1 configuration. The riveted chinstraps and removal of the original m1917 chinstrap loops suggest that the conversion was done prior to 1938. Fold3 might be useful in tracking down the name in the USMC muster rolls.
conn Posted August 15, 2024 #3 Posted August 15, 2024 great helmet, never saw one in this configuration Is that paint and saw dust on outside surface of helmet ? fantastic helmet
Brian Dentino Posted August 15, 2024 #4 Posted August 15, 2024 Nice helmet and the name stampings on the inside certainly point to a Corps used helmet. Good find.
