usmcdoc67 Posted August 2, 2024 #1 Posted August 2, 2024 Attended an estate auction this past weekend and was able to pick this up. As far as I can tell, it is and original, unaltered example. Has the ordnance bomb & US Property stamp on bottom of barrel. All numbers match, including the pencil serial number under the right grip panel.
everforward Posted August 2, 2024 #2 Posted August 2, 2024 Looks great...! Always have loved the '17s.
Rhscott Posted August 2, 2024 #3 Posted August 2, 2024 Great pistol and great catch. Always liked the graceful S&W over the clunky Colt 1917. Both achieve the same result though.
Charlie Flick Posted August 3, 2024 #4 Posted August 3, 2024 Great looking revolver. One nice touch on it is the early style of plain walnut stocks which have the "dished" area at the top. That feature was later discontinued as unnecessary. Regards, Charlie
usmcdoc67 Posted August 4, 2024 Author #5 Posted August 4, 2024 Charlie- You are absolutely correct. That's what caught my eye in the first place. I sent a request to the S&W Historical Foundation to find out more information. As far as I can determine, manufactured in January 1918. Regards, Glenn
Eagle1954 Posted August 19, 2024 #6 Posted August 19, 2024 This is a great find Glenn. Thank you for posting this example with the early grip profile. 👍👍👍
usmcdoc67 Posted August 21, 2024 Author #7 Posted August 21, 2024 Got the Historical Foundation reply. This Model 1917 was shipped on May 11, 1918 to Springfield Armory in a large shipment of pistols. From that point no other information by them. Don't know if the armory would have information as to where it may have been sent to. BTW, Eagle1954: wish I could find a holster as yours. I have the WW2 version already, Doc
Eagle1954 Posted August 21, 2024 #8 Posted August 21, 2024 Wow ! Thank you Doc. That is great detail I am much obliged. I will keep an eye out for another RIA M1909 holster. I have long association with the trade. This one was a blind pig tripping on an accorn. My SW 1917 and holster had been in a family collection for a very long time and came to my friend in the trade in a group of many other stuff. He has a nice 43' dated M1 which I will pick up today. Different war, but I have deep family interest in all. Thank you again for these fine details.
usmcdoc67 Posted December 22, 2024 Author #9 Posted December 22, 2024 Picked this up a few weeks ago to go with my 1917. Not sure about authenticity, so y'all weigh in.
usmcdoc67 Posted December 24, 2024 Author #13 Posted December 24, 2024 Thanks for the replies. Now on to finding the correct holster. Hopefully I can find one at the OVMS-SOS in February.
silverplate Posted December 28, 2024 #14 Posted December 28, 2024 Beautiful finish on your revolver. Nice to see them in that condition. Your ammo pouch is a nicely marked original that are getting scarce. Goes well with your S&W. Thanks for posting.
Garandy Posted January 29, 2025 #15 Posted January 29, 2025 Just like mine but mines September 1918 so grip stocks are later as stated before
