M1917 Cammo Paint

Greetings all.                  

I just got this nice cammo painted lid!

Im not going to do anything to it. Its just fine. I will be hanging it on a wall

as it has a nice cord attached to the underside to hang it with.

Very nice color scheme and I’m going to repeat myself, the undamaged liner and chinstrap you don’t often see.

I wonder if this might be an unfinished 86th division based on the large red shield I've seen in other camo helmets like this.

I think you're right!

The 86th is the only WW1 Division with a Red Shield.

Maybe the unit was moving  out.?

No time to have it  finished?

Does anyone know if Matte paints were used on helmets during WW1?

 

This helmet appears to have been painted with matted paint.

Also I found a brush hair in the paint near the rim.

Im wondering if this is a fake modern paint job?

Most every helmet Ive handled from WW1 used gloss paint.

And the brush hair remaining stuck for over 100 years seems off. Its not buried in the paint.

Mainly if I knew matte paints existed and were used in WW1 that would be a clue.

Those are period paints.  Your helmet is a one looker.

I was mistaken as matted paints were in use before WW1.

I guess I was over thinking it.

Can't help but notice the small  ? "red cross"? symbol on the side. Wonder if it has anything to do with the 33rd Division? Dave
