militbuff Posted July 30, 2024 #1 Posted July 30, 2024 Does anyone know what the two circled ribbons are? I’ve seen the left one before but I can’t recall its ID. I’ve never seen the right one. I was told he was in the MI NG before and during the war.
militbuff Posted July 30, 2024 Author #2 Posted July 30, 2024 I knew I had seen the left one before! It’s the US Army & Navy Union ribbon. Any ideas on the right ribbon?

The AFS ambulance service also operated in WW2. First contingent of American volunteers sailed for France in March, 1940.

militbuff Posted July 31, 2024 Author #10 Posted July 31, 2024 Looks like it’s a Post VJ service MI State Guard ribbon.
KevinBeyer Posted August 4, 2024 #11 Posted August 4, 2024 According to Greg Ogletree's Awards and Decorations of U.S. State Military Forces, the circled ribbon on the right is the Michigan Post-VJ Service Ribbon Style B. The book says "this ribbon was issued for service in the State Troops subsequent to V-J Day, 14 Aug 1945."

It's excellent information that sheds light on multiple uses for that ribbon design. I imagine there are probably other examples of different uses of the same ribbon that, when seen on ribbon bars can only be identified through context.
KevinBeyer Posted August 6, 2024 #13 Posted August 6, 2024 According to Ogletree, this ribbon is designated with his numbering system as R031. Searching the OMSA Ribbon Bank database, these are the following awards that use the R31 ribbon: USANG AL State Guard 3 Year Service USANG AZ Service Ribbon USANG CO Soldier Of The Year USANG ME Commander's Award USANG MI State Guard Post-VJ Day Service Style B USANG OK Distinguished Service Medal USANG TX State Guard Provost Marshall Section Ribbon USANG WA ANG Defense Service Ribbon USASCH-CACC #17 Warren Marksmanship USANG stands for United States of America National Guard. USASCH stands for United States of America School CACC stands for the California Cadet Corps So, this ribbon has multiple uses, but in this case, since the soldier was from Michigan, that helped narrow down the identification.

Once again, that's another great post and useful information. I'm on the hunt for a copy of Ogletree's book! Dennis
KevinBeyer Posted August 7, 2024 #15 Posted August 7, 2024 bertmedals, I know for a fact that Greg Ogletree is right now at this very moment working on a revised edition of his book. I think it is slated for publication in 2025. I would hold off buying the first edition for now. The new book should be light years ahead of the previous one.
