militarycollector1776 Posted July 18, 2024 #1 Posted July 18, 2024 I have a WWI Distinguished Service Cross engraved to Corporal John Miles awarded to him for an extraordinary action on November 9th, 1918 near Wadonville, France (I'll detail his story and this grouping in a separate thread once I can confirm this DSC number). Is this number 4125 traceable in the DSC numbers list to John Miles?
3mxd Posted July 18, 2024 #2 Posted July 18, 2024 4125 is not traceable. According to Gary Mitchell's WW I DSC roll, a Cpl John [no middle initial] Miles, Co E, 131st Infantry [33rd Division], was issued DSC numbered 1729. The style of naming on your DSC (indented block capitals without serifs) matches exactly/almost exactly that of a DSC # 4009 awarded to 1LT Robert L. Nesbit (Co F, 130th Infantry) in 1934, a very late award but after the date (1925) when all medals from the Purple Heart up were named. My guess is that this medal may be a replacement. You need to get a copy of the WD award card to see if that's the case.
militarycollector1776 Posted July 18, 2024 Author #3 Posted July 18, 2024 Thank you, 3mxd. That makes sense since I also have his Purple Heart (also engraved) as well as his Victory medal. I've reached out to Redbird Research to see what files and award cards can be found.
Woodshoe Posted February 12 #4 Posted February 12 This A.M. I found this DSC 4125 in case along with P.H. 23302 named to Miles and a V.M. (SO-MA-DS) for sale. Wondering if the P.H. and V.M. were accompanying the DSC back in July 2024 when you wrote?
