Bosley Posted July 15 Share #1 Posted July 15 Hi All, Do I have that right with the rank and dating in the title? I'm mostly a WWI/WWII collector (and a poor one at that), so this kind of thing I don't have a solid grasp on at all. I'm assuming this is a grouping, as my dad picked it up at the same estate sale. Are those actual award dates listed on the medal cases, i.e. 10/63, 7/65, and Apr/68? Does the rest of it appear to be from the 1960's as well? As in the collar tabs, military academy insignia, and nametags? That all looks a bit newer to my untrained eye. And then there is the cap. I have not handled many caps from this era, but this felt like one of the nicest, high quality hats I've come across. Thoughts on this piece? As always, very much appreciate the help. -Bosley
Dave Posted July 15 Share #2 Posted July 15 Looks like a nice, but common, group to an officer who served post-Korea, pre-Vietnam (anywhere from 1952-1965 or so). The group includes insignia from the military school he attended. The medals show their manufacturing dates, but those are pretty common for that timeframe. The hat is exactly as you'd expect to see one from those years. Unfortunately, there are a lot of "J Nelson" listings in the Navy register, so it would be tough to pin him down without some legwork. Hope that helps! Dave
Dave Posted July 15 Share #3 Posted July 15 Since St Johns is a college prep school, he would have gone there before going to college. There are four Nelsons listed in their yearbooks, one from 1963, 1968, 1973, and 1974. Unfortunately, they only list them by last name...no first or middle initials. :(

Really appreciate that info. This set is sort of out of my collecting range, but the cap I have to admit is a really appealing piece. The 1963 graduate to me seems to line up best with the medals, but honestly the name plates and items related to the school have a more 70s feel to me...
