P-59A Posted June 29, 2024 #1 Posted June 29, 2024 This is a 1946 Us Army promotion from I assume from Captain to Major, Medical Corps Named to Stephen Chess. These things are out of my wheel house so bear with me if my questions seem rudimentary. I assume Maj. Chess was promoted from 2nd Lt. to Major over time. I assume this means he served as an Officer of some grade during WW2. This document has no S/N on it nor indication of what unit he was with and his name is odd enough as to make it hard to find any information on him. Does anyone have a Fold3 or some other way to figure out who he was and what he did during the war? Was he state side or did he deploy? If he deployed, were too? Thanks in advance for any leads, David
P-59A Posted June 29, 2024 Author #2 Posted June 29, 2024 I took that "171" number at the bottom right of the page and subtracted it from 1946 and got 1775. I looked that date up and got this. "Overview History Career management See also External links Both the Army Medical Department and the Medical Corps trace their origins to 27 July 1775, when the Continental Congress established the first Army Hospital " Is this the intent of that little math problem?
Allan H. Posted July 12, 2024 #3 Posted July 12, 2024 To give you a little perspective, if your veteran was a doctor, surgeon, dentist, etc., he was probably commissioned into the army as a captain. I would assume that his promotion to major was his first promotion. Allan

I assume that being he framed this document this is likley was he discharged as. I looked up the AG and this is in keeping with the time frame of other documents he signed
Allan H. Posted July 12, 2024 #6 Posted July 12, 2024 I would assume that he served about three years before being promoted to major from captain. He probably stayed in the inactive reserves after the war as was the case with most commissioned officers. Many of these guys were called back up for Korea because of their service obligation as officers. Allan

Is that correct? And he had war time service...state side or deployed.
