I've seen a few of these over the years.  Details on their use and specific era are scarce.  The findings hardware indicates US manufacture.  None (as of yet) has been spotted in a period photograph so one theory is they may have been made for an early reunion, or possibly as a souvenir upon return from France.  Also, the 353 Observation Squadron remained active in the New York National Guard in the 1920s and after consolidation with some other squadrons once again became the 353 Aero Squadron in the 1930s. This pin may thus be associated with the between-the-wars period too.

CHFR is an abbreviation for Chauffeur--an enlisted rank.  Perhaps interestingly, the Army rank of Chauffeur was one of the authorized enlisted ranks in the Air Service.  Operating aircraft required many ground support vehicles and enlisted soldiers whose primary military specialty was driving motor vehicles were in the various grades of Chauffeur.  353 AS was an aircraft squadron so probably had relatively few Chauffeurs.  Balloon companies, required winch trucks, hydrogen tank trucks and other support trucks and cars and so typically had many Chauffeurs.

Neat item!

Thanks for the info!

Yes- I would assume US made, although the squadron was in France. I have seen photos of 353rd aero members in France, but they are wearing the cloth version of the pin on their shoulders with “2” for aero squadron artillery scouting unit, of which the 353rd was part.

Nonetheless, a nice aero squadron pin, which are hard to come by.
