Bull Moose Posted June 7 Share #1 Posted June 7 I was able to purchase a large lot of wings (50+) a couple of weeks ago. About half were common WW2 graduation issue ratings, a third were post WW2, and 10-12 were fakes, reproductions, or airshow items. Two wings made the whole deal worth while. The first is a hand chased theater made pilot wing. Based on the fittings I am guessing it was made in the Southwest United States, Central America, or South America. The wing tests as sterling and weighs 33.3 grams. Width is undersize at 2 7/8 inches. The shield is 1/4 inch thick and the wings are an 1/8 inch thick. I'm not sure if it was cast, die stamped, or carved from a solid piece of sterling. Has anyone seen a similar heavy weight like this? The second keeper is a first pattern K.G. Luke Flight Surgeon wing, I will try to post photos of it tomorrow.
rathbonemuseum.com Posted June 8 Share #2 Posted June 8 Definitely a cast of an existing wing and then hand detailed. very nice. I don't have a clear sense of where it was made but based on style and findings i would say not in the CBI arena. South America? Africa?
