skinsfan Posted June 2, 2024 #1 Posted June 2, 2024 Hello,I have been going thru a pile of various leggings etc. and this one puzzles me..I had found some info and since lost my page...It has no grommets/eyelets as later models...the set was made at New York Depot and is marked Puttee,Canvas date is very faded but maybe 1890's...The beautiful brass buckles are made by Presto and there is no provision for under the boot strap...I have a few others I need help with but this is one of my favorites..Thanks in advance,Scott
atb Posted June 2, 2024 #2 Posted June 2, 2024 Pattern of 1907, I think. The long webbing strap spirals around the calf, the little stud locks into the grommet, and the end gets tucked into the buckle at the top. Replaced by the 1910 and 1917 models, but all the three can be seen in images being worn through 1918.
skinsfan Posted June 3, 2024 Author #3 Posted June 3, 2024 thanks very much...Army...USMC or interchangeable ???

skinsfan Posted June 4, 2024 Author #6 Posted June 4, 2024 this is the last set I am not clear on...no maker mark that I can find
Illinigander Posted June 5, 2024 #7 Posted June 5, 2024 I have a pair quite similar to photos #6-8 (they do not have the Infantry blue lining) that were issued to Fred B. Anderson, of Co. H, 31st Mich. Inft for his service in the Spanish War. illinigander
skinsfan Posted June 5, 2024 Author #8 Posted June 5, 2024 was your pair used during the war or after the conflict..I figured these all had the same trim..Scott
CAC1901 Posted June 5, 2024 #9 Posted June 5, 2024 The leather instep straps versions are Span Am war period. Up through 1898 they were a dark brown duck but during the war large numbers were made in a khaki duck. These continued in use for a number of years after the war. In 1907 the army adopted a new style front lace up puttee without an instep strap. Then in 1908 the spiral strap version.
Illinigander Posted June 6, 2024 #10 Posted June 6, 2024 Private Anderson served in Cuba during the Spanish war. He brought back an amazing collection of photographs, about 60 in total of his service. The 31st Mich. must have had a photographer along during their time at Chickamauga and in Cuba. At any rate, there are several of these photos of Fred and his pards wearing said items. illinigander
skinsfan Posted June 6, 2024 Author #11 Posted June 6, 2024 I just saw a ratty pair in a flea market that had a lining inside that was a sort of plaid material...it looked like it belonged but I have never seen a material like that in any gear...Scott

skinsfan Posted June 11, 2024 Author #14 Posted June 11, 2024 surely a civilian user wanted some extra warmth...CCC or similar...maybe Boy Scouts!...remember them?
