Folks,

I recently purchased a very nice pattern 1885 artillery dress coat. I have a IW/SAW light artillery display that I'd like to include this coat in.

I thought I read somewhere that artillery dress coats that have red piped edging are light artillery??

Am I correct?

Thanks,

Eric

Its been modified; the rear flashes and buttons are removed. All these coats have piping; mounted ones have a shorter skirt with piping on the hem or edge like this. It displays good from the front though.

Hey there! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but would it be a USMC Full Dress for enlisted men? Looks to have a row of 8 buttons down the front as opposed to 9, shoulder straps with rounded edges sewn down, a tall, standing collar, and simple piping up the plaits of the rear of the skirt to the waist seam where 2 buttons are missing. Buttons are perhaps a replacement if so? Still a very nice find nonetheless!

Forgot to mention that there also looks to be the piece of black leather and perhaps the remains of the label usually sewn into the interior of the collar.

Hello AnEagleT,

I think you're correct. I purchased it as Artillery dress coat. However, when inspecting it, I found US Marines 1906 written inside the sleeve. It has Eagle buttons on the outside not Marine buttons. Any guess why the Eagle buttons were substituted for Marine buttons?

My guess would be that it was done by a collector sometime during its life or some case similar. Probably ran out of buttons for the rear if so...
