I got this pair of pre ww-2 Tank Corps chevrons off eBay couple years back, around $22 if I remember right, I saw a single go for over a $100 sometime back.
Would anybody have a little info on these chevrons? Or even better, maybe a picture of a trooper wearing tanker chevrons?

EDIT: Pictures are lost

NOBODY out there with some ww-1 or Postwar tanker uniform/insignia information? think.gif
I've added a couple of hat cords, one from Warrelics and one from eBay, one looks like it's almost infantry blue, but it is grey.
ANY info would be highly appreciated! ;)

The old standard reference "Chevrons", by Emerson discusses these branch-of-service chevrons. I believe he states that Air Corps was the most common, but other branch's were availiable to any G.I. who wanted to purchase them. Those you have are really nice and I really like all those PFC Specialist chevrons you have.

Sorry that I wasn't of more help answering your original question.

Hey thanks anyhow, it's a good start. I saw a couple years back on eBay some Tank Corps corporal chevrons that went for a small fortune.

Thanks also for the compliment on my PFC Specialist chevrons, I'm glad I at least have a complete collection without the speciality devices, be fantastic to have them with of course.

BTW, got a couple extra PFC Specialist chevrons in the trade section, just in case.

They are great chevrons, to be sure. No doubt I'll never get a set like that to add to my collection without selling a child these days LOL.

They were 'sort of' authorized (I don't have Emerson's book, because that costs a small fortune also) between WWI and WWII. They weren't worn into the second world war as far as I know, and were probably more 'common' from the period of the late 1920's until the mid to late 1930's, from everything I've been able to figure out. Since the tankers were such a small 'corps' back then, there can't have been very many of them made.

You can see far more Air Corps, Medical, and Signal styles than the tanks. The Air Corps styles of 'private purchase' chevrons were worn throughout the war and were a popular item.

Those PFC Specialist chevrons are hard to find these days, unless, again, you have the money for it. I'd love to have some more to add to my collection myself.

Thanks for your info and compliments, I thought I'd add on my Air Corps Master Sergeant chevrons.

I'd really appreciate it if somebody has a picture(s) of a trooper wearing the 1920-42 unauthorized chevrons, for example the PFC Grade 1, that's one stripe and 6 rockers, unbelievable! w00t.gif

This subject on pre ww-2 Specialist chevrons just won't let me go.
While going blind here digging through google, finding all kinds of goodies, but not what I'm looking for.
Here on http://www.doughboymilitary.com/index.php found a pair of pre ww-2 Musician Specialist chevrons.

He also has several pairs of pre ww-2 Army Air Corps chevrons, look in "Insignia & Patches".

The USAAC are the easiest to find and were probably used longer than the other branches. Shown here are the USAAC versions that I have.

Hey Craig, you got some nice patches there, and some good info on the Unauthorized chevrons, THANKS! :) . On my search here for the "Holy Grail", I found this uniform in Stewart's Military, hope I don't get anybody in trouble for showing this, if so, just delete it.

How come it's so hard to find more info and pictures of the US military in the 20'-30's, WW-1 Post war, the Depression?

I did a search thru pics I already have and found these. The CPL in the transport plane is from LIFE dated 11/30/42 and the CPL with the woman is from LIFE dated 12/15/41. I will see what else I can find.

...Now all I have to find is a picture of a GI wearing some of those chevrons...

This is your lucky day, D.A.T. Here are period photos of two soldiers wearing the elusive (and unauthorized) interwar "1st & 6th" chevrons. Both happened to be buglers, stationed at Schofield Barracks in the 1920s.

The first is assigned to Co. A, 21st Infantry. This close-up is cropped from a unit photo taken in front of the company barracks, Christmas Day 1924. Source: The Kiaiokalewa collection, previously posted on the Forum (link here).

The second is assigned to 3rd Engineers, also at Schofield Barracks, ca. early to mid-1920s. Source: Gil Burket, previously posted on the Forum (link here).
