khakiweb Posted May 2, 2024 #1 Posted May 2, 2024 Came across this at a local auction in Wyoming, and at the Plymouth, CA event a guy from northern WA said he had one just like it. He and I both assumed it / they were "Bubba Mods", but after finding another identical one, and looking more closely at the materials and workmanship, we decided these were probably a reasonably common (maybe official?) mod that would have been assembled and used by mechanics as a portable supply of compressed air for inflating tires, cleaning equipment, whatever. Thoughts?
P-59A Posted May 3, 2024 #2 Posted May 3, 2024 Nope. those are hard to find refill stations for bomber crews. The shut off switch was added later. It should have gauges on it. I have only seen the guages for the refill station only once in all these years. Cool find!!! I have the tank with the mounts for the runners and they do not look like your set up. The rig was made to refill the D-2 walk around bottles and the A-14 walk around bottle. It could be ground crews used these too, but its intended use was as a refill station.
P-59A Posted May 3, 2024 #3 Posted May 3, 2024 These pages show the intent and uses of portable oxygen tanks. One use for the large tank that I did not hit on was to be used for a prolonged period of time to work on things were one had no to ability to plug into the aircrafts oxygen supply. The bombay had no oxygen outlets or maybe if the oxygen lines were hit one could effect repairs. What is pictured is one of many ways these large tanks were constructed.
