usmedalman Posted May 2 #1 Posted May 2 I have John Pearce Kane's Mexican Service Medal, named on the edge with his rank as 1st Lieutenant, but the medal has no number. I figured he lost his original so I wanted to find out his original medal number so I looked up his card. I have examined literally dozens of Army award cards, but this one is throwing me for a loop. In all previous cards I have examined and matched with actual medals, the number stamped in the "ordered" section of the card corresponds to the number on the medal and the "serial number" references the correspondence relating to the medal request. In this case, the number in the "ordered" section of the card falls way outside the known number range produced by the mint, and outside the range of contract medals listed in The Gleim Medal Letters book. I would be interested to know if I am reading the card correctly and there was actually a second Mint run not reported in Gleim, or if in this case, this number means something else.
usmedalman Posted May 3 Author #2 Posted May 3 Although Kane's medal is the Mexican Service Medal, I just noticed that this card is for the Border Service Medal, which explains the medal number 19319. I guess I was a bit tired when I was looking at the card.
