blademan Posted April 22, 2024 #1 Posted April 22, 2024 Hi Recently acquired this grouping of wings belonging to a pilot named Newman. I am hoping to research him. I should have asked the seller more questions. I posted a seperate thread on the glider wings. Would be interested in any info you may have. It seems the pilot may have been a glider pilot, pilot, and a bomber pilot after the war with SAC. Thanks for your insight.
pfrost Posted April 22, 2024 #2 Posted April 22, 2024 The glider wings are not vintage. They were made as souvenir wings. Often sold in army/navy stores or air shows or museums.
jeff41st Posted April 23, 2024 #3 Posted April 23, 2024 The wings on the left hand side above the glider wings are post-WW2 navigator wings. The command pilot wings are probably post-WW2. The senior pilot wings are probably post-WW2 as well. I have a set of pilot wings in that same pattern that are clutch back. The Meyer pilot wings are WW2 vintage. Should be an interesting research project.
blademan Posted April 23, 2024 Author #4 Posted April 23, 2024 Thank you for your help! The seller mentioned this pilot flew a 1950s bomber with the cockpit on the top of the fuselage instead of at the front. I'm assuming a B 36 or more likely a B 47? Will be interesting to see how these wings tie together with the pilots story. The Meyers pilots wing have more wear than I have ever seen on a pair of wings. The back and bottom of front of the wing has a lot of the feathers edge worn away. He must have had a lot of flight hours. I wish I had thought to get his first name :-( I bought the group because the seller was planning on splitting the group up and thought there may be an interesting story here. In my mind I imagine this pilot starting as a eager cadet, flying gliders, moving to bombers by the end of the war with a good number of missions, and making a career with SAC during the Cold War and retiring after the Vietnam war (all conjecture). He passed in Calif at the age of 97. Thanks again
