gerard Posted March 30, 2024 #1 Posted March 30, 2024 The Esch casemate museum, located near the village of Hatten, evokes both its role within the Maginot Line and in the 1939-1940 campaign, as well as in the terrible battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen of January 1945. Occupied in 1939-40 by a detachment of the 5th Company of Casemates crews of the 23rd Fortress Infantry Regiment which remained in the position until July 1, 194O, 6 days after the armistice. Seriously damaged during the Battle of Hatten, in January 1945, between Germans and Americans, then left abandoned for a long time, this casemate was taken over in 1982 by the A.A.L.M.A. and completely restored. Regularly open to visitors since 1986, it also houses a small museum of materials, equipment, documents and souvenirs from the Maginot Line. On the concrete slab, an American Sherman M4 tank is there to recall the clashes of 1945 and the suffering of the population of Hatten.
Edelweisse Posted March 30, 2024 #11 Posted March 30, 2024 Nice posting and sharing…. I have visited many Maginot Line casemate sites and this one looks impressive. Been to many around Bitche and Wissembourg..and Westwall/Siegfried Line (Pirmasens)and Irrel. When I worked at Zweibruecken 1984-88, I found many German bunkers/emplacements in the area. Again..nice posting…great pictures…especially for those who can’t get here in Europe.
