usmedalman Posted March 9, 2024 #1 Posted March 9, 2024 I welcome any and all opinions. The pendant is very well struck and measures within contract specs. I bought this 30 years ago as a place holder, but I have never been certain of its origin,
Marshallj Posted March 9, 2024 #2 Posted March 9, 2024 Have a look a this one. Yours looks like a modern restrike. https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/wars-conflicts-and-operations/civil-war/medals-and-awards.html#:~:text=The Civil War campaign (service,82 of 27 June 1908.
Jim T Posted March 9, 2024 #3 Posted March 9, 2024 I have nothing to contribute as to the manufacturer but agree that it is a very nice strike. The double ring on the reverse is of course a good sign. And notice that the rings even blend together at around the 8 o'clock position as with Adam R's shown in post#2 here: It doesn't look like the break in the small ring is visible when viewing the reverse (narrative within that post, and photo in post#9) so maybe not a US Mint strike but still very good quality. Another "engraver attention-to-detail" thing which is overlooked is that the cross-section of the shank is somewhat square, and has it's corners rounded off (to a machinist: "broken"). On most later strikes the shank is circular. And there does look to be a separate ring at the head to attach the chain. I think you done good (short of finding a BB&B original issue in a Ziploc baggie in a junk drawer). ......... ....... Jim T
