danimal03 Posted March 10 Share #2 Posted March 10 hello, thank you for taking the time to post this. Since there have been no responses so far, I will take a stab at this. When I start a search, my initial starting point is findagrave.com. I looked up Marlon D. Johnson. There are only three. One was born after WWII. One man was born in 1907 and his grave does not mention WWII. The other was born in 1921 and it says, 'CPL US ARMY AIR FORCE WWII'. He is buried in TX which is near Oklahoma. If I had to bet, this may be your guy. Unfortunately, the findagrave listing has no listed relatives. Often there are. If I have time later, I will look into this further. I have paid research accounts that may turn up more. Now hopefully this is not a false positive. He simply could not be listed in findagrave so this may not be him. Many people simply are not listed. cheers!
danimal03 Posted March 10 Share #3 Posted March 10 hello again, I looked into my fold3 account. I can find the Marlon D Johnson from the above gravestone, but the service number does not match. Though there are sometimes errors in these databases. I tried reverse engineering the Helen J Johnson connection. I only found confusing results which I won't put down as I am not sure this is the right Marlon D Johnson. Sorry if I was not of any help. The serial number on the tag itself comes back with no results in fold3. Good luck in your search! I hope someone there can piece this together. Helen Posted April 13 Author Share #4 Posted April 13 Thanks you for this information and apoligies for my delay in replying to you - I have found a source which matches spouse details for this person via an obituary but its very strange that the service number does not match. Is this common?

Is this common? Helen, although not a common occurrence, sometimes an incorrect ID tag is punched. Once checked by the owner and determined that some bit of it is wrong, a new one is created. What happens to the old one? It gets pitched in the dump. I know from personal experience as it happened to me when I was in the Army. The serial numbers on my first set of ID tags were punched incorrectly at Ft Polk. They were turned back in and correct ones done. I assume the incorrect ones ended up in the dump. KASTAUFFER Posted April 13 Share #6 Posted April 13 I can only find evidence of 1 man by that name and he was definitely from Texas. He has a National Guard service number starting with a 20 . The service number on that tag doesnt point to anther vet, but thats not unusual because there are holes in the data set. My assumption since OK is close to Texas is that he may have been living there when the war started and they completely messed up the service number on the tag. Its not even a close number match. It was probably a thown away tag as mentioned before.
