917601 Posted March 1, 2024 #1 Posted March 1, 2024 I have this Air Force Back parachute and know nothing about it. Looks to be a standard 28 foot canopy model ( no idea of model designation). What I find interesting is the stencil on it, 164th Camron, MPHS, TENN. From the internet, the 164th Airlift Wing flew C-97s during the parachute date of 1959/ 1960. Any information or thoughts on the parachute and unit are appreciated.
AMT500E Posted March 1, 2024 #2 Posted March 1, 2024 front seperable D rigs for chest mounted reserve are interesting.
917601 Posted March 1, 2024 Author #3 Posted March 1, 2024 Looking at the history of the 164th during the chute time frame, I saw the 155 Tactical Recon Squadron was under the 164th Airlift Wing. “On 1April1956 the 155th converted to the RF-84 aircraft. RF-84s were brand new jet aircraft right off the assembly line. Their mission remained tactical reconnaissance for another five years. ( into 1961). 1 April 1961 was truly a major milestone in the unit's history as it marks the beginning of the 164th's era of military airlift. It was on this date the 164th Air Transportation Group (Heavy) was activated as the parent unit and the155th was re-designated an Air Transportation Squadron (Heavy). The unit received the Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, a heavy military transport based on the B-29.” The chutes stencil - 164th CAMRON MPHS TENN- means what? Could the CAMRON have any relationship with the RF-84 Reconnaissance aircraft flown under the 164th?
amateuraero Posted March 12, 2024 #4 Posted March 12, 2024 Agree with the post about D rings for a reserve chute. Also the back of the container flaps on each side have been removed and the ripcord handle has been bent. These seem to be modifications for civilian skydivers. The parachute itself inside the container could be modified as well. Will check some reference material on the part numbers when I have time. Appears to be a USAF B-20 assembly (modified)? Is there a log book inside a small pocket somewhere on the container behind the back pad or side flaps on the container?
