Thanks for showing your can collection, WWII American, British & German greatly interest me and all I tend to buy locally these days. As you mention the French post war wine cans, here is the one I can put my hand on as I read your posts, this one is aluminium dated 55 and has a specific French design cap. I also have two more designs, one with an American water-can style cap and similar US style side pressings, and the other can has the German / British style cap with similar side pressings to the German and British cans, again each dated in the 1950's, each of the manufacturers chose which of the styles to manufacture. look forward to seeing some of your rarer cans shown individually if you can regards lewis. ...
GWS Posted February 20, 2024 #5 Posted February 20, 2024 The reason I asked about the 2.5 gal. can is I have one, but it is not a US marked one, but a commercially made. It does not look like it was a 5 gal. and shortened to a 2.5, but made as a 2.5 gal. originally. No idea of it's age, but not newly made. I 'd like to see some of your rare cans too, when you can, no pun there! I have see a US water can before but I can't recall the details of it. Thanks. Steve

FEW of the cans had "water " stamped on them (i have one).. mostly they painted white markings on them to make sure they were only water... the other can has no date just a Jb5 on it but was pulled from a pile of wartime brit and german cans... thanks

Hi tmomw, Thanks for the details, always interested and seeing the different markings of cans. I have a collection of American, British & German gas-cans. Also American, British & German water cans. If you are interested I could add a few photos. A 1944 British can I have has the full word ' WATER ' embossed in to the lower section of the can. I also have a 1943 American water can with the manufacturer & date with simply the letter ' W ' under the handles and no information at all embossed into the sides, this one was over-sprayed in navy grey. I think I have another American one with the letter ' W ' embossed in the sides. Also maybe two German ones embossed ' Wasser ' on the sides. The can I asked you about which you say has ' jb5 ' on the side, I missed one of those a couple of years back at a militaria market in a field over here in Normandy. I have similar construction ones but with absolutely NO markings at all. Unless I individually lift each can out to look at the sides I can't recall all the makes, dates and such, perhaps it's time to make a details list of the cans. If you have the time I would like to see more of the cans you have. regards lewis. ...
