Uniforms of the Day Posted February 12 #1 Posted February 12 I just acquired this in a lot of WWII items. Helmets are not my strong suit. It has a 44th Div. decal on one side and what appears to be captains' bars scratched into the white paint below the front grommet. I just don't know if this was period painted for snow camo purposes, or something done later? Thanks for any input.
ShibaLegend Posted February 12 #2 Posted February 12 Is the 44th decal on the white paint layer or on the black layer under the white paint?
Bugme Posted February 12 #3 Posted February 12 Wow, this thing is a mess: black, white amd also a red painted edge under the white. Add to that someone cleverly installed an early WWII snap in rayon sweatband(backward no less) and rayon nape strap into it, makes this a text book example of a 50's-60's era Illinois National Guard liner. Guard units seldom got new equipment back then. So, stuff like this was repurposed, repurposed, repurposed, repurposed, and repurposed again.
Uniforms of the Day Posted February 12 Author #4 Posted February 12 It is indeed a mess. The decal is below the white paint. Certainly, the way the ugly white paint has wrinkled it would not have been used in a peacetime environment. Bit the man I bought it from was about 80, and he bought it as a kid from a downtown Portland, OR surplus store. He has had it all these years. And he didn't paint it. So zi thought maybe it was WWII era and hastily field painted for camo purposes. But, it sounds like it's just an ugly duckling that someone, for whatever reason, made even uglier!
