Ardun Posted February 11, 2024 #1 Posted February 11, 2024 Hi all, I purchased this at auction last year, wanted to know what exactly I have. The auction was sparse on details, just saying that this was a WW1 USMC officer campaign cover. I'm hoping someone can give me any info on the EGA and/or the cover itself. Thanks! stucky151 Posted February 11, 2024 #2 Posted February 11, 2024 Cant speak to the cover, but the EGA is a service officer M1912 with molded continents. Circa 1916. Would be period correct for WW1 officers campaign cover.
warguy Posted February 11, 2024 #3 Posted February 11, 2024 The cover has potential. It has what looks like early manufactured officer cords, and the sweatband , maker and way it is marked makes me feel earlier as well. Officers purchased their own uniform items, so it is typical to see private manufactured non contract pieces like this. My only hesitation is it appears that the brim is not rolled (rolled means usually about 1/2 inch of the edge is folded under then sewn). I have a named 1918 field hat like this, also privately purchased that belonged to a Marine pilot in WWI. Even privately purchased, it has the rolled brim just like the EM models. Once again, yours might be of the same period, this maker just didn’t roll the brim, or the marine officer bought a non rolled brim off the shelf (Army patterns did not have rolled brims), or this hat dates to post 1920, when the Marines stopped the rolled brim (they typically still retained two rows of stitching around the edge however). I would try to identify the original owner if possible from the initials, or try to date the hat through research on the maker. The first two initials of course ought be officers name with MC after “Marine Corps”, who knows. I like the perforated initials though and have again see this on earlier caps. I have a great book on early uniform manufacturers, I just can’t remember if I packed it or not. It might offer some help on this maker. I am away but home this evening and will check. Good luck, looks to me to have potential once again.
