Castle_Keep Posted January 7, 2024 #1 Posted January 7, 2024 The Chinese & German flags on this embroidery may indicate that it dates between 1903 and 1911. However, I was wondering if the ship (pre-dreadnaught) might be identified, since it has 4 smokestacks. No luck yet. Any ideas? Thanks!
Dirk Posted January 7, 2024 #2 Posted January 7, 2024 I totally agree with your dating…the armored cruiser even narrows it down to 1909-11…when we sent 4 over there. You have been showing some nice ones!
dhcoleterracina Posted January 7, 2024 #3 Posted January 7, 2024 The small issue is that the flag shows 48 stars. That began in 1912.

atb Posted January 7, 2024 #5 Posted January 7, 2024 I think that any inaccurate number of stars on the flags may be errors on the part of the artisans.

You have been showing some nice ones! Hi Dirk- I see...so it's actually an armored cruiser. Your suggested 1909 - 1911 timeframe seems perfectly plausible. Thanks so much!

Dirk Posted January 7, 2024 #9 Posted January 7, 2024 Here is one from the mid to late 20’s….30 stars….numbers of stars were not as important to the artist as filling the blue square with stars. This one came from the Marine’s grandson and apparently was never hung or exposed long term to the sun.
Dirk Posted January 7, 2024 #10 Posted January 7, 2024 And another from the same period as Castle is showing

Your cruiser has 3 stacks (I think) and is pointed the other direction. Your eagle also is in full attack mode.
Dirk Posted January 7, 2024 #13 Posted January 7, 2024 Unlike yours, mine is just a cruiser….the eagle attacks is somewhat rare by the time it was made, as the Boxer Rebellion was long past….you can date them as well by the relation between the eagle and the dragon. But we know the dates this Marine served at the legation
