SoCalvin Posted January 5, 2024 #1 Posted January 5, 2024 An avenue of military aviation I've headed down lately is the WASP (and of course WAFS,etc.) These women were badasses and deserve all, and more, of the belated credit they now receive. I put together a small art piece to honor Libby Gardner for my little home museum, am now reading the 'On Silver Wings' book and followed along on the madness here on the forum about her personal collection and looked for more history on the amazing women. Like a lot of you I noticed among the few popular photos available, along with Libby, was a great picture of Shirley Slade (Bodes knows of whom I speak) but that's where the mystery started for me. I pulled out my copy of Life magazine with the historic cover of Shirley Slade sitting on the tail of her trainer and right away thought that there is no way these are the same women (which they are not, but more on that later). Then when re-reading the article and checking the pics my eyes were drawn to the center right photo on page 77 I assumed was Shirley but it is captioned as Nancy Nesbit and the girl in the lower left photo named as Shirley Slade who doesn't look at all like the cover girl! Shirley appears to have much lighter colored hair, more similar thinner nose and another clue is the thin bracelet on her right wrist. Am I crazy (please don't answer that)? Back to the photo of the beautiful woman in the flight helmet and goggles named in a hundred places on the interweb as also being Shirley Slade - ITS NOT!! Was Shirley working for the OSS because she was a master of disguise, a secret assassin?! I have rights to steampunk/film noir of Secret Agent Shirley Slade BTW.
manayunkman Posted January 5, 2024 #2 Posted January 5, 2024 Nancy does not look like the girl on the cover to me neither does the woman on the bottom left. They are 3 different people.
SoCalvin Posted January 5, 2024 Author #3 Posted January 5, 2024 Thanks for humoring me, sir. I thought I was confused (I am but that's a whole nuther issue lol) The only one that seems to be Shirley is on the cover because I can make out her name tag. Just think of all the $$ being spent on merchandise under the premise that the fly girl is Shirley as well.
