usmedalman Posted January 1, 2024 #1 Posted January 1, 2024 Back in 2015 Ron Fisher put out information on the resizing of several recent campaign medals. These medals all came out around the GWOT time frame and the pendants were 1 3/8th-inches in diameter as opposed to the traditional 1 1/4th-inches. At some point the Institute of Heraldry stepped in and corrected the size of the medals and made a few other changes outlined by Ron in his information paper. The medals Ron identified were: Kosovo Campaign Medal Afghanistan Campaign Medal Iraq Campaign Medal Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal Global War on Terrorism Service Medal Korean Defense Service Medal Armed Forces Service Medal Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal I recently noticed that the Air Force's Air and Space Campaign Medal in my collection is the larger 1 3/8th-inch size and am wondering if anyone knows if this medal was also resized to 1 1/4th-inches. Also, does anyone know the source and date for the resizing order. I assume it was the DoD, but I am not sure.
usmedalman Posted January 10, 2024 Author #2 Posted January 10, 2024 I just learned that this change was announced by the DOD in May 2008. I wonder if other medals like the Air and Space Campaign and Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal that came out in the same time frame were also resized.
