bunkerhillburning Posted December 5, 2013 Share #278 Posted December 5, 2013 Hi folks. Trying to ID a number of medals I have had for awhile. This one is confusing me so I thought I'd post a couple photos and hope you can date the item for me. Simply marked ' sterling ' on the reverse in two locations. The bar on which the words ' Expert Rifleman ' are found has a pattern of circles which are perfectly lined up. Thats throwing me. thanks

hirsca Posted December 22, 2015 Share #282 Posted December 22, 2015 Very informative thread. Went through all 12 pages and I still need help with these two. They were in a framed pre and WW2 era Army grouping. But I believe that these are USMC awards. Can someone confirm USMC and give me an approximate date/age? Many thanks in advance. hirsca Posted December 22, 2015 Share #283 Posted December 22, 2015 Here is the framed grouping they came from.
SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted December 23, 2015 Share #284 Posted December 23, 2015 I believe there was a time when the Army was using our badges just like the brief time in the 30's when we used theirs. I am sure one of the more knowledgeable members will know the precise timeframe. I will look into it though and report back when I have an answer if someone else has not already addressed it. Thanks SgtM. I was aware of the use of likenesses of each others marksmanship badges for a short time, but I thought it was maybe in the late 20's. I just wish that I had some provenance. I was hoping being able to date those two badges to determine if they are place holders for originals that might have been issued earlier. SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted December 23, 2015 Share #286 Posted December 23, 2015 This is borrowed from another thread (I cannot remember which one) but according to it, the pistol badge is from around the late 40's.
SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted December 23, 2015 Share #287 Posted December 23, 2015 I would also venture to say that the rifle badge is around the mid 40's as it appears to be the cheap cast style. Perhaps Tim Brig can let us know what he thinks, he is quite knowledgeable when it comes to these.

Actually, the crossed Krag rifles are not cast, they are stamped from sheet metal and do not have a flat back. The Expert Rifleman bar is solid with a flat back. SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted May 20, 2017 Share #289 Posted May 20, 2017 Been awhile since anyone's been here so I figured I'd drop by and leave this piece I acquired a while back! Found an image of the Marine in an the August 1919 issue of Recruiter's Bulletin - possibly he wearing the badge in the photo? Here is Colonel John J. Dooley's 1915 BB&B crossed revolvers pistol expert badge. Note: I am unsure why he is depicted as a Major in 1919 but was a Col in 1915. Perhaps he was demoted or the Recruiter's Bulletin just got his rank wrong (which I have seen several other times in that publication).

Flightpath Posted June 15, 2017 Share #291 Posted June 15, 2017 Hi, maybe I'm a bit late in showing this beauty but just had too....... if it was purchased by someone here and already discussed then just stare at it like I did/do........ Sold on Ebay some weeks ago for under $50! It has the safety pin style catch and a fairly common 1903 rifle type that is said to be used right up to and into WW2......... no wonder it's hard to date these! This is a perfect example of what to use in the reference section, with the date and maker on the box! cheers, John

Flightpath Posted June 18, 2017 Share #293 Posted June 18, 2017 Hi, I'd like to know where the diagram originated from and how accurate it is, just for interest sake... I have used it as a guide but keep thinking to myself "I thought this/that would have been older than that" when checking wings and other badges....... cheers, John This is borrowed from another thread (I cannot remember which one) but according to it, the pistol badge is from around the late 40's.meyer.jpg
bobgee Posted June 27, 2017 Share #294 Posted June 27, 2017 This 5-Bar USMC Basic badge turned up at the Chickasha, OK show this weekend. Unusual to find one like this w/ five Qual bars for Small Bore; Hand Grenade; Carbine; Auto Rifle and Machine Gun. Each piece is hall-marked with the H&H Star logo and sterling. I date it to late 1940s. Semper fi.......Bobgee
