A friend of mine has been tasked with cleaning out her deceased cousin's home. The gentleman was a 76 year old Vietnam veteran and retired from a local university. Needless to say he was well educated and had approximately 3000 books on various topics. He, unknown to her, had collected about 40 military medals ranging from the Indian War period through the Vietnam era. I have not yet had the opportunity to see the medals, but she gave me a good description of the collection. I asked her about the Indian Wars medal and instructed her to give me details. The medal is numbered No. 1738. She was interested in trying to match the medal with the soldier it was awarded to. After doing a google search I came upon this site and saw that several members here might have access to a roster. From what I have read here I'm certain I can verify it's authenticity (I can't wait to see it). I have had a reproduction for about 25 years. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to helping her research the individual. Thank you.

Hello,

Indian War Medal No. 1738 was issued to George Lee.  He was issued this medal on 9 April 1914.  At the time it was issued he was serving as a Master Signal Electrician in the Signal Corps.  Hope this helps.

Attached is a copy of the original award card. As you can see, he lost his original medal #354 on March 18, 1914 and #1738 is a replacement. His unit and rank at the time of qualifying for the medal is at the top of the card, and his rank and unit of assignment when the medal was mailed to him are at the bottom of the card.

As a follow up. George was also awarded China Campaign Medal 1064, Spanish Campaign #7128 and Philippine Campaign #19942. All as replacements for the original medals he lost on March 18, 1914. Hopefully these medals were also part of the man's collection and now with you.

Thank you very much for the info. I hope you are having a Merry Christmas. In her possession she also has the China Relief Expedition medal 1064. She has a total of 40 medals (still waiting to see them - her and her husband had a large tree fall on their house - bad wind storm - and are in the process of repairing the house), We are planning to sit down shortly after the New Year arrives. She has the Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal M.No.4771, and the Spanish Campaign Medal No. 5473.

The sale of those medals will provide them with thousands of $$$ for their house repairs
