RayRay Posted October 23, 2023 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2023 My great uncle Frank Woronowicz was in the army during wwii. Saw action at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, and other areas of the pacific. I’m looking to see where I can find out more about his campaigns history.
Big Iron Posted November 28, 2023 Share #2 Posted November 28, 2023 Since no one else has been able to find much on him, here is the basic stuff without having Ancestry I can provide. I must advise you that the WWII Enlistment page has the birthdate incorrectly entered as 1855...but his enlistment number is there and that is a good start for asking NARA for more docs. Frank Woronowicz Find a Grave WWII Enlistment Info On a side note, it seems that as I research WWII veterans, there seem to be A LOT that come from Wilkes-Barre, PA. Is there a reason this is such a well represented locale?

29navy Posted November 30, 2023 Share #5 Posted November 30, 2023 Looks like he was part of the Coast Artillery - Searchlights? This is from the Wilkes-Barre Paper 1943 - 23 Nov 43 This is from the Honolulu Advertiser 9 July 1944. My guess is that he is in Hawaii.
29navy Posted November 30, 2023 Share #6 Posted November 30, 2023 Here's a close-up of his PA Compensation form with highlights of his service. Looks like Enlisted May 1 1940. Foreign (Service (outside of CONUS) & Dec 1941 - April 6, 1944. (Hawaii was considered Foreign Service as it wasn't a state yet) Furlough From April 7 - May 13 1944 in Domestic Service (CONUS) Then Foreign Service from May 14 - 24, 1944 Then Domestic Service from May 25, 1944 - June 26, 1945 Not sure how well it all lines up with the newspaper articles or other info you may have. He was from PA so I got a copy of the PA record showing his date of enlistment and discharge and his dates in ETO. 👍
