USMC Wings?

Recommended Posts

I picked these wings up recently. They were described as USMC 'style' wings, and I was wondering if they may be a veriation of USMC Wings? or perhaps foreign or re-enactor?

The cloth is a slightly lighter green than the photos show.

Thank you

I believe that your cloth wings, like those shown below are from Honduras. Honduras uses the same USMC/Navy parachute wing design as their basic parachutist badge. They also have senior and master levels which the USMC does not. Also I have never seen cloth or color badge patches on USMC utilities . The Force Recon guys I knew wore non subdued metal Combat Diver and Gold Navy Jump wings on their Camo utilities while in garrison.

Some did during the Vietnam War like Recon and US Advisors to the SVN Marines.  I picked up this 1960s era tiger stripe shirt with a US made cloth paratrooper wing from the daughter of the veteran who served with the 1st and 3rd Recon Battalions and the 3rd Force Recon Company.   This style cloth paratrooper wing also came in subdued and was also worn by USN personnel during the Vietnam War.  I kept photos of some of the US advisor uniforms worn during the war that are pictured below.  The cloth paratrooper wings on these uniforms are of South Vietnamese manufacture.

Those paratrooper wings were manufactured by the Wolf-Brown Inc. insignia company out of LA, SF and San Diego.   I have seen one of these sewn on the fatigues of a US Navy UDT-13 OG-107 shirt from the Vietnam War.  I have not seen these worn on USMC fatigues.  They were also manufacture in subdued black on OD material.

Thank you. That's a good bit of detailed information. So USN rather than Marines.

I have to ask. How do you tell USN from USMC?

To my inexperienced eye they seem to be very similar.

Thanks again.

You can't tell as these are USN/USMC paratrooper wings and worn by both services.  Like triplecanopy mentioned above you rarely ever come across the cloth version of these wings being worn on USMC fatigues.  You sometimes see them worn on USMC caps or on off duty blazers.   I have tried to keep track of a few of these types of cloth wings that were already sewn on a uniform (mostly USN fatigues) so I can differentiate them from very similar cloth wings worn by the airborne forces of Honduras, Columbia or even South Korea.
