jeeplover Posted October 6, 2023 #1 Posted October 6, 2023 i have a chance to get this group. my friend was able to save it from a local antique shop from being split up. the guy it belonged to is apparently the one who sold it. i can not find much info about usmc mp in Vietnam. i am hoping from the few pictures i have you guys can help. the only picture i could find with a similar helmet was a guy on eBay. in his picture, the helmet is white tho. most info i find on Vietnam mps is about the army not USMC. any info will help thank you all for your expertise. if i get this group i will post more detailed photos.
ShibaLegend Posted October 6, 2023 #2 Posted October 6, 2023 Incredible grouping! Does the grouping have his badge included?
CavalryCombatant Posted October 6, 2023 #3 Posted October 6, 2023 What a cool grouping! If you don’t end buying it, please keep me in mind! The helmet w/ EGA looks almost like a cheater helmet.. basically a liner painted, sometimes with material added, to look like a steel shell. I’ve never seen one done for MP before, but it makes sense if you’re wearing it all day! CC
jeeplover Posted October 6, 2023 Author #4 Posted October 6, 2023 It is a helmet liner. The helmet with the cover my friend said is actually a world war II helmet. Unfortunately no it does not have the badge. Any idea why this helmet is green when all the others I see are white. Why is there not very much information out there about USMC military police. What was their role in Vietnam?

jeeplover Posted October 7, 2023 Author #6 Posted October 7, 2023 So reading the Wikipedia page I'm guessing this would be kind of a really rare setup cuz it looks like at the end of Vietnam they got disbanded and they only got reactivated at the beginning.
jeeplover Posted October 9, 2023 Author #7 Posted October 9, 2023 From the orders page you have it is to a Private D. L. Wilson. His military occupational specialty (MOS) was 0311. That is Infantry. The orders are assigning him to the Naval Weapons Station Norfolk, Virginia. The orders originated from Camp Pendleton where Wilson was a student at either the Infantry Training Regiment, or afterwards renamed for a time Infantry Training School. The group looks to be either Vietnam era - up to 1975, or even up to the early 1980’s. He was not an MP by MOS, but could have re-enlisted and lateraled into that field at a later time. Batches of enlisted Marines were routinely selected on graduation from ITR/ITS for assignment to Barracks duty at various Naval Weapons facilities both in the US and overseas as a security force. Hope this helps. Got this information off another forum
jeeplover Posted October 9, 2023 Author #8 Posted October 9, 2023 At what time was he in the RVN? The clothing and gear shown in the pictures, as mentioned, were used Vietnam era, to include a number of years afterwards. A bit confused on the mention of MP battalions being deactivated as to how that squares with the orders page shown. He was not with an MP battalion at the time the orders were cut. The orders have him in the rank of Private as an MOS 0311 Infantryman assigning him to Marine Barracks Duty Yorktown, Virginia. Which was, and still is considered in CONUS. This was also a Guard/Security billet and not MP. He certainly could have received orders to the RVN sometime after arriving at MB Yorktown. If that was the case it would be interesting to know how he pulled being assigned to the MP’s as a grunt while in country
Backtheattack Posted October 9, 2023 #9 Posted October 9, 2023 Great grouping. Thank`s for all the background informations.
jeeplover Posted October 9, 2023 Author #10 Posted October 9, 2023 Okay I spoke to my friend and asked him what else is there ?he said there was a pair of jungle boots from the '80s. So it would appear that this was a Vietnam era Marine corps uniform issued in the 80s. He also said none of the MP gear is named to the guy and he's not sure why that was in the guy's stuff. Thank you guys very much for your help
268th C.A. Posted October 9, 2023 #11 Posted October 9, 2023 Norfolk! Funny well now it is,,,,I grew up in Norfolk as a 16-year-old with a driver's license. I was in base traffic in the morning, the USMC MP flagged me through I just hung a U-turn inside the gate, then the exit side MP stopped me asked me for my pass, Huh I gave him the dumb look, so out of the car I went. Trying to explain how I got on the base. This was all way before 9/11. This leather neck was. by the book. He wanted to throw me in the Brig, the only thing that saved my rear, was a girl with me her dad was a Naval Officer, and she had a military ID. They let us go with a don't come back! that was probably him....LOL
