WWII USMC Patch regulations?

Wife and I are currently watching the HBO series "The Pacific" on Netflix.  A large part of Episode 2 takes place when the Marines leave Guadalcanal and spend time refitting and retraining in Australia.  During this time they are wearing a service dress uniform with a short jacket similar to the Army "Ike Jacket" (I believe this is usually called the "Vandergriff Jacket.")   My understanding is that the Vandergriff jacket was derived from a British field uniform and was issued to the Marines because there were not enough 4-pocket green "Alpha" jackets available in the Navy/Marine supply system.

But my real question here is on the patches.  All the Marines are seen wearing the 1st Marine Division "Guadalcanal" patch on their jacket.  However, some Marines are wearing the patch on their right sleeve and some on their left sleeve.

In the Army, at this time (this scene takes place in 1943) patches were only worn on the left sleeve for the current unit.  The practice of wearing a former unit patch on the right sleeve was unofficial and actually a violation of Army regulations (although it was "tolerated" in many units) until I think 1944 or even 1945 when the "Former Wartime Service Shoulder Sleeve Insignia" was formally authorized by Army regs.

But what was the Marine reg on patches?  Were the patches supposed to be worn on the right or the left sleeve?  Or did USMC Regulations even specify which sleeve?  And did the Marines ever authorize an equivalent of the FWTS-SSI like the Army did?

For background, I'm a 23 year Army veteran, pretty well versed on Army uniforms both current and past, but I really don't know that much about Marine Corps uniforms and their various regulations.

There is this very famous picture of Mitchell Paige shaking hands with General Vandegrift when receiving the Medal of Honor in Australia.  Patches had just been authorized by the US Marine Corps, so I always assumed that the regulations were just too new.  In fact, I believe the initial First Division patches were made and issued in Australia.  I also saw that in Pacific Series.  SF - Jeff
