WW2 US Trench Art Shell (SS) ?

Hello

 

What are your thoughts on this Trench art?

• Dated 1943
• The shell reads 8/28/ss or 8/28/44?
• Marseille was liberated 8/28/44
• I don't think the SS were in Marseille

 

This doesn't remind me of a fantasy piece like the SS pocket knives and SS rings that were massed produced.

If this piece is fantasy, it sure lacks a lot of eagles and swastikas.

I would guess it's a date of 8-28-44. Obviously made after the liberation  and probably by local French craftsmen, why would they make a souvenir for the Germans, especially the SS?  It is an odd looking 4 though, probably just to keep us wondering!
