Jasmof22 Posted September 16, 2023 #1 Posted September 16, 2023 I purchased this at the Max Show and foolishly didn’t pay attention to the catch on the brooch. I think the brooch was repaired at some time. Has anyone seen a catch like this before?
atb Posted September 16, 2023 #2 Posted September 16, 2023 I've seen similar on pre-1921 Army marksmanship badges.

atb Posted September 17, 2023 #4 Posted September 17, 2023 I don't believe so. I have not seen that type of catch on an issue US full or split brooch drape.
Jasmof22 Posted September 17, 2023 Author #5 Posted September 17, 2023 Thank you, I get nervous when something like this happens. Are you in agreement that the medal is original?
USMCR79 Posted September 17, 2023 #6 Posted September 17, 2023 The M No. indicates that this was made by the US Mint - However the Mint never used this type of broach - Nice medal though - Hope you got it for a good price. One suggestion is that if you decide to collect US medals you should try to obtain a copy of "The Call Of Duty" by Strandburg & Bender - this may help answer your questions and provide a valuable reference. Bill I actually ordered it this weekend.
aerialbridge Posted September 17, 2023 #8 Posted September 17, 2023 Smart move, it's the definitive source for the hobby of collecting US medals. The esteemed Mr. Strandberg is on this forum and sometimes posts.
Bruce Linz Posted September 17, 2023 #10 Posted September 17, 2023 I think you have a good Army Civil War Campaign Medal M.No. 114 planchet. The ribbon and brooch look much newer. I have always associated those wrap brooches with the safety pin clasp with modern fakes. Just my two cents.
Jasmof22 Posted September 17, 2023 Author #11 Posted September 17, 2023 I thought the ribbon looked good, but the broach was suspect.

Bruce Linz Posted September 17, 2023 #15 Posted September 17, 2023 Here is a picture of what I have always believed the correct brooch for an M.No. prefix Civil War Campaign Medal should look like: This photo came from an old post in the USMF "for Sate" section.

The correct broach should have a blackened finish like the one I am attaching (without engraving) the broach shown has a brass finish and were sold by Dan Byrne a Collector in the 1970-80's Bill
