Hi Folks:  Picked a few boxes of 45 cal M1911 pistol ball ammo a few years back and I would like to figure out the approximate year manufactured and anything specific.  Thank you for your assistance

Its steel cased, my guess is 1954. I have seen earlier lots that are 53. Hopefully some of the ammo experts will comment.

What does the head stamp on the cartridge cases say?

Winchester started production of steel cased M1911 cartridges in 1953. Your lot number places both of your cartons in the 1950s. As Charlie stated above, a cartridge headstamp from one of your cartons would pin down the actual year. If not, I can tell you with a fair degree of accuracy that your cartons date from the late 1950s. My copy of TB 9-AMM 4 : SMALL ARMS AMMUNITION LOTS AND GRADES, dated November 1959, shows Winchester lot # S-22451 as the last recorded lot in that decade. A headstamp would pin it down to the actual year. Hope this helps.

I need to apologize…I should’ve known about the date stamp on the round…clear as day:

S22415:  “55” for 1955

S22451:  “56” for 1956

Again, I failed to open the boxes and look!  Big time apology …. Thanks

Guessimate on value of each box of 50 rounds?

No apology needed.  We are all here to learn more.

On value, I don't think that there is a particularly high demand for this Cold War ammo.  There is lots and lots of USGI .45 ball ammo around, so this steel cased stuff would appeal mainly to the ammo collectors among us.  My guess that this stuff would probably sell in the $50 per box range.

Thanks for your posts.

Thanks for your comments….. I appreciate all the expertise…but I should have known.  It’s one of those “Dah!” Moments…to be honest I didn’t even think of opening the boxes.

Again…thank you!

Nice collectable ammo, full boxes with clean labels would easily fetch $50, as Charlie had commented.
