iron bender Posted September 9, 2023 #1 Posted September 9, 2023 Does anyone out there have clear images of men in the above unit in the field? I'm specifically looking for gear pics (canteens). I have this here Civil War era 58 smoothside canteen with a very unique marking. I'm starting to find multiples of these, and my only guess is, judging by the unit marks, these are likely 80's/90's vintage applied markings. Please refer to below pics. The only reason I mention 71st NY is I can't find another 71 regiment in this time frame. Pretty sure you'd have to go back to 1865 to find another 71st in the US Army. I don't believe (at this point) these are Civil War vintage markings, but I don't see any reason a State Guard unit wouldn't have a huge stash of NOS Civil War gear at their disposal. Anyhow, pics please if you've got them. Thanks! My example is the first pictured, last photo of span/am canteen is for marking similarities. The other pics are from dealer websites etc. http://mcpheetersantiquemilitaria.com/08_mess_gear/08_item_012.htm and just discovered the one above today....
CAC1901 Posted September 9, 2023 #2 Posted September 9, 2023 The 71st NY was well photographed in 1898. Theres hardly a book on that war that doesn't have images of them in camp or in Cuba or back at Montauk. Any gear they have in pictures will be what they wore 'in the field.' One problem with items having just a letter and a number is that the number is often the soldiers number in the company. But the last canteen shown for example (using a RIA 1898 US stencil) is probably the 38th US Vol. Inf. Co. D - soldier no.73.
