Phillip Brandt Posted August 27, 2023 #1 Posted August 27, 2023 I attended an auction today looking to pick up a M1917 Enfield and or a Krag carbine. I knew the Krag had issues almost at once. The rear sight was missing, the nose of the stock was held on with a brass pin and the barrel wasn't right for some reason. Not having my guides with me I let it go. After I got home I began studying the only photo I have of it. It appears to me that it has barrel from a M1903 or 03A3 on it. Is it possible to swap these? Sorry only photo I have, I didn't take any at the auction.
Phillip Brandt Posted August 27, 2023 Author #2 Posted August 27, 2023 After further research I'm wondering if this is a cut down rifle with a M1903 front sight sodered on it. I don't see how a Krag bolt could work with a mauser style receiver.
ludwigh1980 Posted August 31, 2023 #3 Posted August 31, 2023 Unfortunately these were a favorite of civilian sportsman outfitters and surplus dealers to modify and alter. Some would cut down the rifles into so called constabulary carbines and some into brush guns or carbines. they would cut the barrels down and re-crown them as well as placing a ringed front sight (like the 1903). Variations aboud. Basically any such altered rifle is either judged as a shooter or for parts. The amount one would have invested into restoring one of these (The stock, front barrel band, correct barrel etc etc) you can pick up a decent all original example at a show or fair). I think they were a beautiful rifle and to find and handle an all original in fine condition is a treat.
