Kind of makes you wonder if only the 5th and 6th MGB's used purple or blue as those shapes/colors did not represent any other units. Unlikely that the 4th MGB used blue as a blue shield would represent Military Police. Very unlikely that the 8th and 73rd (MG) companies would use blue as a blue square/diamond would represent the 3rd Bn. of the 5th/6th marine regiments.

Greetings!

 

Saw this thread and wanted to share this grouping currently housed in the collection of the Fort Walla Walla Museum in Washington state.
 

The patches are quite unusual, both tunics of which came directly from the Marine’s son back in 2008:
