Grouping from 317th Troop Carrier Group Sergeant

Lile R Burgess would enlist April 13th 1943, and be assigned to the 317th troop carrier group. I suspect he may have been in the 41st troop carrier squadron. Because of a couple of photos. The 317th would fight in the South Pacific Theatre, and would see action in New Guinea, the Philippines, and several other pacific islands. They would mostly do resupply, and reinforcement runs. However on some occasions they would airdrop 503rd and 511th Paratroopers onto key battles during the Philippines. The reason I suspect he was in the 41st squadron is because on two of the photos it shows them going to Japan. This is significant because in order to broker a treaty between the two nations there needed to be a communication line between the two nation, so 6 C-47 from the 41st squadron were sent to Japan. Making them the first planed to land in Japan, since the beginning of the war.

Superb grouping, thanks for sharing it.

The 317th Airlift Wing is now located at Dyess AFB in Abaline, TX, and the 41st Airlift Squadron is located at Little Rock AFB, AR - both units currently flying the C-130J.
