Unidentified pocket metal maltese cross badge, not a medal, for USAAF/RCAF pilot

Interesting photo showing a good sized maltese cross badge on the wearer's right pocket. Does not look like any badge i have seen. Flat edges on the cross arms vs the inverted V on some. Does not seem like there is any writing or heraldry on the cross itself. Squadron badge? Foreign award?
