Hello

Eight years since I joined and first attempt to communicate. Judging from my failed attempts to get something out there I may not get noticed, but will try again.

There appear to be a few rules that indicate where a posting should be listed. Since I am looking for Mexican Boarder Service personnel  information I hope I am close. If not direction would be appreciated.  I am ultimately trying to develop the history on this item for eventual sale.

(This sounds like a commercial endeavor which it is. If this is inappropriate and not allowed please let me know or redirect me to a proper section if it is allowed in another section)

USMC MEXICO 1911-1917 MARKED

Likely made by B.B.& B.

Four Digits plain no Prefixes

Number 1786

Thank You

Bob

Hi,

I am going to move this to the medals section, and hopefully someone there will be able to help you.

Hi Bob, I don’t know about the USMC part, but according to the Mexican Border medal roll, medal number 1786 was issued to:

Donald J. Zimmerman

First Sergeant, FA

Shamokin, PA

Unfortunately, your Marine Corps Mexican Service Medal #1786 does not appear on the very short medal roll for this medal.  The medal roll contains 204 names.  A minimum of 3,000 Marines were eligible for this medal.  How many of those 3,000 received these medals is unknown to me.  My guess would be around 2,000.

Hi

Thanks for your Information and comment. I am trying to share photos. (I HOPE THEY ARE CORRECTLY SIZED AND NOT TOO LARGE NOT REAL CLEVER AT THIS COMPUTER STUFF) These two medals were purchased together near where I believe Albert Kasper lived. They are in similar condition. There was also a WWI Victory at the same place.

I was hoping for a confirmation by getting a name match to the RIM number but now perhaps I can add information on the USMC  MEXICO MEDAL based on its comming with the 1ST Enlistment Medal? Perhaps Kasper has a Jacket showing up that eludes to his possible MEXICO Service period. I am fairly certain the MEXICO is a BB&B Strike.  Condition of booth are relatively good at least they seem all original and un-tampered with. The fact that they were together is one point as I say and some service record info if available will be more proof but when and where does it provide certainty.

My last attempt at a sale for a Civil War Medal USMC Campaign, as I recall was fairly rewarding.

I hope I am still acting within guidelines of the FORM.  I am getting too old to hold onto a few 1000 items and hope to use the FORM for information and assistance in liquidating everything.

Thanks

Kasper qualified for the Mexico Campaign based upon his service in 1914 on the USS West Virginia. However the medal was authorized on February 11, 1918 and Kaspar was discharged in mid 1917. It is probable that he applied for the medal after he was discharged and the only record of the medal/medal number will be found in his service record.

Hi Bill

I will try and Beg some additional information where I can Thanks for your follow up. I will seek out his service record. The circumstances of his service give another layer of possibly attaching this medal to him. Sometimes you just need to go with your Gut. I think this is a match. Now the WWI Victory medal may turn out to be a stretch. I will need to check out the issue dates for that medal. I was Leary of the fact that it is a wire loop and in far better condition than the other two. Your thought of applying for a Post Discharge medal may somehow explain the Vic medal now. Love this research stuff. Thanks again I will post what I find out.

I did a quick search and showed discharge in July 1917, which would qualify for the WWI Victory. Maybe both the Mexico and the WWI Victory were mailed together.

Here are the muster roll entries for him that I am finding (He has two separate enlistment dates, but it is the same guy - You'll see on one of them the award of your numbered GCM!). What is an ER Badge (seen in the Aug and Sept 1916 MRs)?

Sorry for being so long! I didn't think it would be that many muster rolls or take that long! :)

ER Badge stands for Expert Rifleman Badge.  He qualified Expert on 14 August 1916 and was presented the ER Badge on 6 September 1916.  This man's official enlistment is 5 July 1913, that is what is recorded in the NARA records.  The earlier dates, in June 1913, are when he is applied to join the Marine Corps, and when he was accepted into the Marine Corps.
