Full disclosure: I am not a US bayonet collector. The bayonet I am presenting for clarification was given to me by a friend of the family years ago, and I've just come around to photographing it (to the best of my ability).  I have reviewed Garry Cunningham's Bayonet Points website, but the level of info presented there, while comprehensive, left me scratching my head - other than RIA = Rock Island Arsenal.

Can someone here boil-down what I have? There are a few tiny details on the upper scabbard fitting and handle I couldn't capture on my camera, so I added them to the photo.

Thanks for your assistance.

The bayonet itself is in M1905E1 configuration, so a 16” bayonet cutdown to meet the new 10” specifications of WWII.  Originally made for the M1903 Springfield, but it also works on the M1 Garand and a handful of other American rifles.

I don’t believe the edged weapons ref is the right place to post this, but good luck!  Awesome bayonet.

The bayonet was originally a 16" blade M1905. It was altered to a 10" blade M1, (M1905E1), with a beak point.

The scabbard was originally a 16" M3 scabbard shortened to M7 length.

Covered in detail in Gary Cunningham's U.S. Knife Bayonets & Scabbards book.

Gary in his book was not sure of the significance of the "REP" stamp. I always looked at it as representing "replacement", or "repurpose".  Or, it could have been the initials of the company contracted to shorten, and rebuild the scabbards. But, who knows at this point?  Just my guess.  SKIP

Thanks for your insight gents, that's very interesting!  My apologies for posting in the incorrect forum/sub-forum,

Nice RIA, M1 cut-down with bowie style blade! Now find one from each manufacturer, if you can!
