Guest arbrnrngr Posted June 8, 2023 #1 Posted June 8, 2023 Apologies for the basic photos... This is a saber (the old one of course... not the shiny one) from my wife's family I thought I'd share. I'm pretty certain it matches photos of her uncle in, what I hope is an attached pdf. There are a handful of other photos of him as well. The person in the photo is her grandfather but we also have many other pictures of his brothe/her uncle with a similar saber in various places. The uncle was a career officer with Roosevelt's Rough Riders and campaigned all. Her grandfather, according to family lore, served in the Phillipines and a few other hot spots but didn't make it a career. Both made it through multiple campaigns with her grandfather passing in the late 1950s. So my question is, does this saber appear to be the same as in the photo of the 4 soldiers in the pdf file? Her grandfather is the lower right person. If my photos don't all come across, I'll try it another way. Officer Thos. F. Bates_bottom_rt_SFCal_4.pdf Officer Thos. F. Bates_SFCal_2.pdf
Guest arbrnrngr Posted June 8, 2023 #2 Posted June 8, 2023 You can open the pdf's by clicking on them I believe. Two are the same - added by mistake.
mikie Posted June 8, 2023 #3 Posted June 8, 2023 It looks to me like some version of the M1860 Staff and Field Officers Sword. They were standard for many years. Mikie
blademan Posted June 8, 2023 #4 Posted June 8, 2023 Does look like an upgraded 1860 staff anf field officers sword with a m1872 (i believe) sword belt and buckle. The rig is likely from later 1800s or early 1900s.
stratasfan Posted June 8, 2023 #5 Posted June 8, 2023 Posting the pictures here for reference, in case anyone can't see them!
Illinigander Posted June 11, 2023 #6 Posted June 11, 2023 I would wonder if those fellows except the sitting soldier who seems to be a bird colonel, have not the rank for a staff and field officers sword. illinigander
