patches Posted June 4, 2023 #1 Posted June 4, 2023 Passed by this today, and thought if I can find images of it, then post it, found it. Richard Alan Gilley, of Maspeth Queens NY KIA Vietnam during the first burst of fighting near the Embassy in Saigon, TET, an 11 Bravo assigned as supplemental security personnel to the MPs, his unit is given as Company C 716th Military Police Battalion, but this might be an error and his unit was Company C 52nd Infantry. The location is on the side of an old American Legion Post, named after a Local WWI Marine KIA in France, Joseph B. Garrity. This post sponsored a Pop Warner Football Team from the late 50s to the mid 70s , The Garrity Knights, which I played three seasons on, 71,72,73. Like all vet posts membership has faded away, with the building becoming derelict, the building still stands and has been remodeled and restored as The Serphin R. Maltese Community Center Greater Ridgewood Youth Council. Serphin R. Maltese a still living vet of the 45th Infantry Division Korean War, and former Republican New York State Senator.
patches Posted September 17 Author #2 Posted September 17 Yes Gilley was in C Co 52nd Infantry, attached to 18th Military Police Brigade. A Roster of 11Bs KIA with the brigade, most on January 31 we see, real heavy fighting there.
patches Posted November 5 Author #3 Posted November 5 Here's the site when the building and grounds became derelict. Above it is a Subway line to Manhattan, the M Train.
Wailuna Posted November 5 #4 Posted November 5 Private First Class Gilley's grave marker (though not his remains) is now located in Long Island National Cemetery. See Find a Grave memorial number 2685195.
