Some ETO bring backs

After shelling out $2600+ in car repairs in the last 3 weeks, this was a welcome surprise waiting for me this afternoon. One of our volunteers was in Michigan visiting family and returned with a box of "stuff". These were the souvenirs of (then) T4 Forrest A. Thompson (1909 - 1989) who served w/ the 30th Medical Depot as a dental tech...he remained in the Army until he retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1965 after 22 years service.  These items have remained in storage since they were brought back to Michigan in 1989. First is a nice Eichorn "Derfflinger" model Army officer's sword. It has the remains of the knot and a somewhat stiff carrying strap.

This was in the box, and I think I know why but won't have confirmation for another week or so...a piece of USMC canvas:

He must have been near a Luftwaffe base at some time...he got a couple LW sport shirt eagles that didn't fair so well, as well as a nice summer weight flight helmet w/ all the do-dads, including the internal comm parts....

Check out this Luftwaffe marked medic's pack! What makes it really interesting are the customs tags on it - he used this to carry some of his belongings back to the states!

....and lastly, an 8 foot long vehicle ID flag....I'm assuming it suffered from some hungry critters but who knows....

Outstanding find.  Love that German pack he sent his stuff back in.  Also, I'd like to hear how the USMC bag got connected with all this.

Thanks for sharing!!
