US ink marking inside captured holster?

I recently acquired a German pistol rig. The interior of the holster’s flap has a black ink stamp of what looks like a letter followed by -5499.

I’m assuming it’s something done by a GI since I’ve never seen a Hun marking like this. Can anyone confirm my guess ( or shoot it down in flames)?

Thanks,

Len

Looks like it was done with a GI's laundry marking stamp:  last initial followed by the last four of his service number.

Blacksmith

Looks like a “G-5499”, bit there also looks to be a name scratched into the leather below it.

“Neil…”?
