phantomfixer Posted April 15, 2023 #1 Posted April 15, 2023 This popped up at the local honey hole from the USCGC Eastwind from the internet, she cruised in support of Operation Deepfreeze 1960.. a long stretch of canvas .. I am assuming mounted to railings.. all hand painted…
Salvage Sailor Posted April 15, 2023 #2 Posted April 15, 2023 Outstanding piece, "Around the World", her circumnavigation of the globe in1960-1961 pole to pole, Arctic Polar Bears & Antarctic Penguins. That's the 'dodger' for the brow aka the gangway (the 'stair thingy' that we use to board the ship from the pier,) it would be lashed to the sides of the brow. It will clean up nicely with a light soap & water washdown, which is how we maintained them. A photo of USCGC EASTWIND circa 1961 returning from her historic voyage circumnavigating the globe (Note the gangway on her starboard side)
phantomfixer Posted April 15, 2023 Author #3 Posted April 15, 2023 Thanks for the location Savage!! I figured it was lashed somewhere like that… I’m not sure what the tan stain is.. maybe cardboard. I thought it was a cool piece… will try some mild soap..
Salvage Sailor Posted April 16, 2023 #4 Posted April 16, 2023 ICEBREAKER USCGC EASTWIND (WAGB-279) In October 1960, as part of Operation Deep Freeze, she departed Boston, passed through the Panama Canal, crossed the Pacific, visited New Zealand and McMurdo Sound. Leaving Antarctica, she traveled the Indian Ocean, came through the Suez Canal, crossed the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to return home in May 1961. This tour made the EASTWIND the first cutter ever to circumnavigate the globe. Two mountains in Antarctica, Mount Schmidtman and Mount Naab, were named after her captains during this period: Captain R.D. Schmidtman, USCG commanded the vessel in 1960, and Captain Joseph Naab, Jr., USCG commanded her during 1961 and 1962.
