Construction is consistent with a period example.  Some minor repair work appears to have been done - but overall it looks pretty good to me.  Nice original.

Forage cap is 100 percent.  Simply no way to know how long insignia has been there but in hand shadows and such should help.  Nice lid!

I’m not an expert either but I agree with AustinO and wartimecollectables comments. It’s in really nice condition and just a few repairs! It looks like what ACW collectors refer to as the type 2 forage cap with the square brim and larger crown. The type 1 had a curved, half moon shaped brim and a smaller crown. The insignia could be original to the cap but it seems that a number of serious ACW collectors have added original insignia to their caps. From what I’ve seen, from some prominent dealers and other collectors, it’s acceptable and many say it’s hard to tell when insignia was added. I really like these forage caps and this one looks great!
