diamonddave Posted April 9 Share #1 Posted April 9 I would appreciate any help in identifying this dug button. The button outer diameter is 19mm. It has no back piece and no obvious mfg. markings. I have seen many similar images of buttons with the eagle and I on the shield, but all seem to have backs with markings. Does anyone know if this is Civil War era or perhaps an earlier federal militia type?
Bob B Posted April 9 Share #2 Posted April 9 These one piece eagle I buttons, typically silver plated, were used regulation use for infantry from 1821 to around 1840, when two piece buttons came into use. So they do pre-date the Civil War, but it is possible some saw use early in the Civil War by militia companies wearing older uniforms.
