postmanusnac Posted April 1, 2023 #1 Posted April 1, 2023 I got this last year. A really nice p38, with matching serials and capture papers. The group also included a holster, 2 mags, a few letters and some pictures. One letter in particular is interesting as he describes in detail what he considered the 3 toughest engagements he fought in.
postmanusnac Posted April 1, 2023 Author #2 Posted April 1, 2023 Here is an excerpt from one of the letters to his parents talking about "Hill 2" outside of Serrig. "And then came hill#2. It was a big hill about a mile outside of Serrig that the Germans were holding with tanks and infantry and had zeroed in with artillery. To make a long story short we attack three times (our battalion) and each time we take the hill, but we got there with such few men that they'd drive us off with artillery and a counter attack. The last time we attack we got there 27 men out of the battalion and were promptly knocked off. We drew back about 800 yds and set up around a group of pill boxes we'd taken in earlier action. They brought up Bn Hqtrs Company and the A&P Plt and all together we had about 120 men. "
sundance Posted April 1, 2023 #4 Posted April 1, 2023 Very nice P-38. I can't imagine reading a letter like that from my child. How parents of a serviceman made it through those times I'll never know.
USCapturephotos Posted April 1, 2023 #5 Posted April 1, 2023 What a wonderful souvenir with great provenance. Having that detailed letter to go with it just makes it! Paul
Deuce Posted April 10, 2023 #8 Posted April 10, 2023 Very neat piece of history. I’m getting to the point in collecting that I’m more interested in how the item got back instead of the item itself. The capture paperwork is fantastic!
